Frozen Faces

Meet The Teacher: Jillian Larriviere

Hello I am Jillian Larriviere and I teach at Taylor Middle High in Pierson Florida "The Fern Capital of the World". I am the only art teacher in my high school so I teach every form of art. I have recently revitalized the ceramics program and my students are loving it! I love introducing my students to new things and watching what they come up with

Project Description

Students will create a bust, can be a self-portrait or any face. They will explore the pinch pot method, coil building and slab building all in 1 piece. Textures will be added to bring character to the busts. Will show the cold finish method with acrylic paint to finish them.

Differentiations and Accommodations

Differentiation

Struggling Learners

Accommodation

Learning Objectives: Knowledge

Students should know the difference between pinch pot, coil method, and slab building methods.

Learning Objectives: Skills

Creating 2 pinch pots to create a hollow sphere that will turn into a face. Using a slab and coil method to create a bust.

Learning Objectives: Attitudes/Values

Students will learn how to adapt and use critical thinking skills to pivot on the fly when sculpting their bust.

Formative Assessment

Checking to make sure pinch pots are made. Handout for coils and intro to slabs.

Summative Assessment

Checking to see if instructions were followed. Did they do each step to accomplish the final result.

Reflection and Discussion

Did they chose a particular person that they modeled their bust after? What would they have done different? What worked and what didn't?

Lesson Activities

Pinch pot sphere

Students will create 2 pinch pots of equal size. Slip and score them together so it creates a hollow sphere. This will become the face. Place to the side and cover with plastic to let it harden more. Shape it with a paddle to make it more "egg shape" with an even consistency all the way around. Start adding facial features while looking at reference photos or images. You can keep coming back to sculpting the face.

Build the bust

You will make a hollow tube about 6-8 inches tall. Place on a slab. The slab can be a kidney bean shape or oval. Slip and score the bottom of the tube to the slab. Closer to the edge of the slab not in the center. This becomes the support for the head and neck. Let the pieces harden before attaching so it can support the weight.

Coil the bust

Once the pieces have hardened some, you will then start taking 1-2 inch wide strips of clay and start building the bust up. Alternating starting and stopping points so they are not all the same. Blend on the inside and outside and work your way up and around the hallow tube till you reach the shoulders and it meets the neck. Add details such a clothing after it has set a bit and has stiffened up.

Cold finish

After it has hardened, sit out to dry thoroughly. Cone 04 bisque fire. Pour a watered down black chalk paint and acrylic paint mixture(equal parts) all over the bisque bust. Let dry 24hours to soak in the bisque. Begin painting with acrylic paints to your desired look
